ACL Letter #15 - Settling in
The Library Of X A Common Life
Finding Our Way
Morgan and I had the opportunity to meet with Phil and Keri Woodall from The Library Of. They specialize in making amazing videos as well as marketing and strategy. We had a great time and got a lot out of it.
Your attention is valuable. Companies pay millions of dollars trying to figure out how to capture and then hold your attention. Our attention. With that in mind, Morgan and I are constantly thinking about who our community is and how to meet you where you are. How do we stand out? Keri and Phil walked us through a series of questions that shed great light on those questions.
A few realizations from our time with Keri and Phil include:
If, with regards to gardening, you don't know where to begin,
If you believe the lie that you have a "black thumb",
If you've tried gardening in the past and have failed miserably,
If you want gardening to be simplified,
If you want a hobby that helps you disconnect from the digital world, feel more stable and secure, and helps you slowdown,
If you want a more healthy lifestyle and fresh ingredients to cook with,
If you want to connect with the primal path and the essence of your humanity,
If you feel disconnected spiritually and emotionally,
And lastly, If you want to be cool -
Then Morgan and I can relate with you. Because everything up above was us at some point in time. And some even now. And it's our hope that as Morgan and I walk along the journey, and find our way, we can bring the lessons we've learned to your table and share them with you. And eventually, we hope to build a community where we can all share our personal bounty with one another. Because Morgan and I want to learn from you as well.

Prepping for Spring
Morgan and I have been asking ourselves "Why do we garden?". I feel like its a healthy question. Understanding why we do the things we do helps us know whether or not we should continue doing them or if we should do them differently.
When I answered the question - I said for food. I grow a garden for food. Not necessarily for beauty, although I love the way vegetable gardens, and food gardens look. Not necessarily for exercise, although I enjoy the workout that comes with it. Not necessarily for security or independence, although I like the idea of that. But because I want to supplement our diet with nutrient dense vegetables and fruits.
Morgan called BS on that. She said I garden for the soil. That the vegetables are a litmus test for how well I can build my soil. Honestly she knows me better than myself. And if I am honest with myself, she is right. I LOVE building the soil.
Recently, we had some guests over to our house. I was showing them the garden and stuck my fingers in the soil. I was able to push my finger 3+ inches into the soil. I got really excited and I'm pretty sure I made our guests uncomfortable. But what it showed me was that our soil is alive and healthy. The garden soil has NEVER been tilled and hasn't been aerated in months. And yet it was friable and loose enough for me to stick my bare finger 3+ inches down into it. I challenge anyone to find a patch of earth where they can do that. I'm a proud garden dad.
So... With that said, It was with great pleasure that I had some time this past weekend to mulch the garden and begin looking forward to spring plantings. I didn't pull any plants. I cut them down to ground level and covered with mulch!
Added a solid 2-3" of chopped leaf mulch to bare garden spots. The strip at the bottom of this picture, where you can see some green and it looks like little weeds, is actually green onions. They made it through the freezing weather.
