ACL Letter #13 - Fall/Winter Garden Update
A baby broccoli head!
The Glory Days of a Winter Garden
You might have read in previous letters and podcasts where I mentioned the fall/winter garden being my favorite. The reasons are many. No weeding. No bugs. No summer heat and humidity. And fresh, tender, tasty greens for salads... for weeks. Right now, the garden is a blend of vibrant greens with a few reds mixed in. The broccoli and cabbage are forming heads, the kale is a deep green, and the mustards carry a spicy punch that brings every side salad to life.
Alcosa Cabbage
Lacinato Kale. Our favorite Kale and with limited space, the only one we plant.
Georgia Collards.
Onions we planted in late October. Its about time to pull the soil back to encourage bulbing.
A bowl of chopped salad greens from the garden: Kale, Arugula, Mustards, Collards, Turnips, Mizuna
Some red clover we seeded between the broccoli and Brussel sprouts. It's a legume, so it helps put nitrogen in the soil, attracts pollinators when it blooms, AND best of all - is a great medicinal plant. Morgan uses it in teas.
